Year 5

year-5

Welcome to Year 5

In Year 5 we are learning about at a range of very exciting topics such as:

  • Rocks and Caves/Escape From Pompeii
  • Earth and Space
  • Saxons/Vikings
  • Life Cycles
  • Forces
  • Properties of Materials/Mining

We also have lots of exciting and fun trips planned throughout Year 5!

Reading is something we love to do and we really hope you can share this experience with your child. We ask you to listen to or read to your child as much as you can and write a note in their diary to tell the teacher about their experience and understanding. When reading with your child at home, you will have a range of books to choose from. Each child will take home a Lexile book that they have chosen. At Parkgate, gaining enjoyment from reading is really important to us, therefore each week the children choose a book from the reading area that particularly interests them.

  • Mr Littler Teacher
  • Miss Somerville Teacher
  • Mrs Wallace Teaching Assistant
  • Mr Barber Teaching Assistant
  • Morning Session 8.40am - 12.15pm
  • Afternoon Session 1.00pm - 3.10pm

Home School Diaries

At the beginning of the school year, each child will receive a home school diary. This is to provide parents and teachers a form of communication, a place to record how often a child has read (at home and in school) and a brief description of how they have done. Each child will take home a Lexiled book that they have chosen and the teachers will check the children’s diary once per week. Please write a note when your child has read and comment on their understanding of the text. We really appreciate as much reading as you are able to do with your child.

Homework

Spellings will be given out each week on a Monday and children will be tested on these the following Monday. You will find your child’s spellings in their Spelling Journal that they will stick in each week. We ask that children practise their times tables a minimum of 3 times a week and that children are listened to read, each day, for a minimum of 10 minutes. Maths, Reading and SPaG homework will be set as appropriate.

Uniform

We pride ourselves on our uniform. Children should all come to school wearing full school uniform: black, white or grey socks, flat, black shoes with a strap or laces, black or grey trousers/skirt and a white t-shirt. Children should have a white P.E. top, shorts and trainers or plimsolls. It is very important that each child brings their own named P.E kit, to be kept in school, each half term. In Foundation 2, we have P.E every Monday.
